Happy Hour gains substance...

OPTIONAL SIDE TABLE AT 12/17 EVENT, TIPS FOR THE NEW HEALTH CZAR

Tom Daschle is going to be the Obama Administration’s “health czar.” He’ll be the one in charge of getting federal health care reform and he needs to hear from us!

Join us at a special edition of Repro Health Happy Hour, where, cocktail in hand, you can tell Tom what kind of health care reform YOU need.

What do you think Tom should know? What are your biggest health care concerns?

Want to make sure he knows that we need reproductive health care?

We’ll gather your thoughts and submit them to the Obama Transition Team. We’re registered as an official Community Meeting, so Czar Daschle himself might be joining us!

What Prison's Got to Do with It: Confronting HIV and Mass Imprisonment

Wednesday, December 10, 2008
6:30 - 8:30PM

LGBT Community Center
208 West 13th Street (btwn 7th/8th aves.), NYC
Free ~ Open to the public ~ Refreshments provided

Across the country, people who are formerly imprisoned, policy advocates, AIDS service providers, prison justice organizers, people with HIV and other community members are coming together to confront the intersection of HIV and mass imprisonment. Together, we can and must build a community-based movement to address the ways that imprisonment makes our communities vulnerable to HIV.

Project UNSHACKLE, CHAMPs new program, is guided by the work of veterans in this struggle. The forum will introduce the project and focus on the far-reaching effects of imprisonment within our communities. Our communities are harmed by imprisonment in so many ways, putting individuals, families, caregivers - the entire community - at increased risk for HIV. Access to prevention tools, like condoms, in prison is a critical to HIV prevention. But working to change U.S. drug policy so that less people are going into prison and people have the support they need when they're released is also HIV prevention justice.

Join us as we come together to fight to heal and restore our communities!

Speakers Include:
John Bell - Philadelphia Fight
Alan Perez - Gay Men's Health Crisis, Action Center
Waheedah Shabazz-El - CHAMP
Stacey Thompson - Women in Prison Project, Correctional Association of New York

Moderator:
Laura McTighe - Project UNSHACKLE Coordinating Consultant

A Pro-Choice Voice in Adoption

Spence-Chapin, a non-profit, pro-choice adoption agency, is working citywide to raise awareness about modern adoption practice through trainings with hospitals, family planning and community health centers, as well as community-based organizations and government organizations. We advocate for the inclusion of adoption as an essential and integral component of "options counseling" services and are committed to ensuring that professionals who work with pregnant women have the tools necessary to present this option to their clients and patients. We also advocate for women on a systemic level to standardize the response to women and families who are exploring adoption.

Request a training for your staff today and ensure adoption is integrated as a reproductive option to women and families facing unintended pregnancy or the recent birth of an infant they are uncertain they can parent.

Please contact us if you would like the following FREE educational tools sent directly to your office:

"Adoption Reference Guide for Providers in NY and NJ", a comprehensive handbook that offers healthcare and family planning provider’s information about modern adoption practice, legal rights, adoption for infants with special needs, community resources and referral information.

"10 Things Everyone Should Know about Adoption",
a user-friendly pocket guide for patients and clients (contains information in both English and Spanish) that includes ten of the most frequently asked questions about the adoption option.

Each year, about 4 million American women become pregnant and decide to carry their pregnancies to term. Does the law see a woman differently once she becomes pregnant? While there are countless legal contexts in which a woman's pregnancy might change her legal position, this panel will focus on two that are particularly controversial. First, does her relationship with her employer change? Secondly, is she free choose or decline medical treatment in the same way she was before she became pregnant?

Across America, anti-choice elected officials and activists are working to ban abortion. From state legislatures to the campaign for the White House, efforts are underway to treat women like criminals and to prosecute trained medical doctors.

Banning abortion won't stop abortions, it will just make them extremely dangerous.

The How Much Time Campaign has created a great tv ad that you can pay as little as $50 to run it in an area of your choosing! Do it now to run it during the RNC convention!

Become an Abortion Doula!

The Abortion Doula Project is seeking smart, awesome, caring women to be part of an amazing program in New York City!

What is an abortion doula?
An abortion doula is a woman who provides compassionate, continuous support for a person who is having an abortion. Abortion doulas use the same model of care as birth doulas, supporting a woman before, during and after her abortion. To learn a little more about doulas and abortion doulas, check out this article by Miriam Perez who has helped us get the NYC Abortion Doula Project off the ground.

The group is currently working on their website. In the meantime, please contact Mary at MaryM at protectchoice.org or Lauren at LaurenM at protectchoice.org.

July 29th - Young Women and Health Care Event in NYC

NARAL Pro-Choice New York and the National Institute for Reproductive Health present:

The Young and the Healthless: How Being Uninsured Affects Young Women

TUESDAY, JULY 29TH | 6:30 pm – 8:30 pm

470 Park Avenue South, 7th Floor, New York, NY

With new statistics showing that young adults account for almost 30 percent of the nonelderly uninsured population, health care advocates must address what the impact is on a group of people who are still in their reproductive years and foregoing preventive care.

At this event, a team of young women who are addressing the issue at their respective organizations will present recently released data, tell stories of real women who are uninsured and how a new reproductive health free clinic in NYC is helping, and share how young advocates can get involved with the health care reform movement.

The following organizations will be represented through the speakers: NARAL Pro-Choice New York, National Institute for Reproductive Health, Raising Women’s Voices for the Health Care We Need, Health Care for All New York, Reproductive Health Access Project, and the Women’s Reproductive Health Free Clinic.

All are welcome, and summer interns are encouraged to attend.

Please RSVP by July 25th to pawatramani@prochoiceny.org

THE POCKETBOOK MONOLOGUES PREMIERES IN NEW YORK ON JUNE 28TH!

THE POCKETBOOK MONOLOGUES PREMIERES IN NEW YORK ON JUNE 28TH!

A fun, provocative, and entertaining dialogue with an award winning cast - creator Sharon McGhee, actress Kim Coles, media personality Jacque Reid, the remarkable Phyllis Yvonne Stickney, Toni Belafonte, and Sandy Daley. These ladies are raising the curtain to talk about the POCKETBOOK, the label black women affectionately describe as the triangle between their thighs.

The Pocketbook Monologues reveal a collection of heartfelt emotions about sexuality, intimacy, and responsibility. This on stage expression of stories from women of color was inspired by the Vagina Monologues. It's performed in a stirring style from the Black female perspective, and includes a tender view of the Coin Purses too. The New York Coin Purse cast features Harlem's own incomparable, Taylor Jenkins-Thompson.

The show enters 'stage-right' with real stories and a 'keeping it real' chance to advance Sharon's mission of greater dialogue about health issues impacting African-American women and girls, particularly HIV/AIDS awareness.

The inaugural "Pocketbook Honors" ceremony will celebrate New York/New Jersey leaders in the grassroots and community movement--Rev. Lynda T. Rassman, Rev. Stanley Justice, and Ms. Maxine Frere. June 28th. Don't miss it!

Counter-protest This Saturday to Support Birth Control!

From the National Institute for Reproductive Health's blog....

This Saturday, June 7th, marks the 43rd anniversary of the Griswold v. Connecticut decision in the Supreme Court, which established constitutional privacy protection for married couples’ use of contraception in 1965. Unmarried women obtained the right to use birth control a little later in 1972.

Sadly, despite the Supreme Court’s decisions, women across America are still fighting for their right to contraceptive access. From the financial barriers millions of women face in accessing contraception to pharmacists’ refusals to fill birth control prescriptions, women are left to defend their right to contraception. However, those aren’t the only barriers. Many in the anti-choice community are working not only to abolish the legal right to abortion but also to end women’s right to access birth control!

This Saturday, the American Life League is staging “Protest the Pill Day: The Pill Kills Babies” demonstrations across the country to protest the anniversary and women’s access to contraception. Their accusations about the dangers of the birth control pill are medically inaccurate and show the dangerous extent to which our opponents will go to control women’s bodies and their reproductive health. Show your support for women’s access to birth control by counter-demonstrating this Saturday!

COME COUNTER-PROTEST AT PLANNED PARENTHOOD IN MANHATTAN AND BROOKLYN THIS SATURDAY!

Does Gender Engender HIV? Forum Next Wednesday!

Does Gender Engender HIV? Vulnerability and Resilience Across the Gender Spectrum

Wednesday, June 11, 2008
6:30 - 8:30 PM

LGBT Community Center
208 West 13th Street (Between 7th & 8th Avenues) NYC

Free ~ Open to the public ~ Refreshments provided

Around the world, the social, economic and political aspects of gender are entwined with the HIV epidemic. Sexism, transphobia and the gender panic at the heart of homophobia are root causes of social injustice and marginalization that fuel the epidemic. But how do gender and gender expression create, increase or reduce vulnerability to HIV?

Do those living within binary gender structures, transgender and non-gender-conforming people and/or gay men of all gender histories have common cause in the epidemic – or are there distinct aspects to our struggles that hamper collaboration?
What do research, policy recommendations, and our life experiences tell us about where we should be directing prevention efforts?

Speakers include:
Vanessa Brocato – GMHC
Nathan Levitt – Callen-Lorde Community Health Center
Kim Watson – Community Healthcare Network
Moderator: Hadiyah Charles – HIV Law Project

Co-sponsored by: Callen-Lorde Community Health Center, Center for Health and Gender Equity (CHANGE), Community HIV/AIDS Mobilization Project (CHAMP), FIERCE!, Gay Men’s Health Crisis (GMHC), Harlem United, HIV Law Project, New York City AIDS Housing Network (NYCAHN), The LGBT Community Center, Queers for Economic Justice

To co-sponsor the forum or for more information, please contact James Learned at jlearned@champnetwork.org or call (212) 937-7955 x 60.

Great new video about NYS Pro-Choice Bill!

Check out this great new video about the Reproductive Health Act! This bill is important beyond New York’s borders. When it finally passes, we believe it will change the way we think about reproductive freedom across the country. As other states rush to pass abortion bans and “trigger laws” that would ban all abortion if Roe v. Wade should fall, we are promoting a proactive piece of legislation that will safeguard our rights. We are working to lead the way to protect women’s health, and hope the rest of the country will follow.

The Reproductive Health Act strengthens New York’s laws and protects a woman’s ability to make one of life’s most important and life-changing decisions -- whether or when to have children. The bill guarantees women’s right to choose or refuse birth control or abortion. It treats family planning as a public health issue. And it ensures that if continuing a pregnancy would jeopardize a woman’s health, she will continue to have safe, legal options available.

Politicians have shown a frightening willingness to interfere in private medical decisions – and the Supreme Court has said that is okay. Now is the time to safeguard these important protections for women’s health and autonomy.

This bill isn’t just about pregnancy, abortion or birth control. It’s about autonomy, privacy, and dignity. It’s about creating and supporting healthy families. It is about health care policy that respects our ability as individuals to decide the course of our own lives.

It’s about creating the world we want.

Wanderlust Bike Tour for Reproductive Justice

Wanderlust Bike Tour

This summer, a group of sixteen women are traveling from New Orleans to New York City on a reproductive justice bike tour. In solidarity with local activists and rooted in the belief that sharing stories is a powerful way to elevate awareness and create social change, we'll be pedaling from town to town to listen to your stories and document how you and others are working to expand access to reproductive health care, defend reproductive rights, and promote reproductive justice.

It's a story collective - it's a bicycle caravan - it's building the movement for reproductive justice!

The goals of the trip are to document the inspirational, groundbreaking work happening across the country and build horizontal networks to strengthen our collective movement for reproductive health, rights, and justice.

THE INVITATION: Do you or does someone you know live along the route? We're looking for health care providers, sex educators, supportive clergy, reproductive justice advocates, policy changers, radical activists, doulas, midwives, culture jammers, and anyone who is working to empower women to control their bodies and their lives.
Join us to share your story at a Wanderlust discussion gathering. We're interested in knowing what you do and why you do it, what the important issues in your community are, and how we can work together to build a strong and vibrant movement for social change.

More than a hundred women’s health and medical organizations, students, and individuals organized across the nation for the seventh annual Back Up Your Birth Control Day of Action.

While the FDA decision that made EC available over-the-counter to women 18 and older was a victory, the high cost of EC over-the-counter, usually between $40-60 in pharmacies nationwide, is a continuing barrier to some women accessing EC.

New York's Abortion Law: Are We Really Protected?

A Forum on the Reproductive Health and Privacy Protection Act

Judson Memorial Church
55 Washington Square South, NYC

Thursday, March 13
6:30-8:30pm

As federal protections of abortion access are weakened, New York’s leading reproductive rights organizations have been asking this question. The Bush administration has filled the courts with ultra-conservative judges that have made devastating decisions regarding women’s health. The Supreme Court’s unprecedented move to uphold the federal abortion ban last April was a wake-up call that we must fight to ensure that New York continues to protect and respect a woman’s ability to make private reproductive health care decisions.
On March 13, please join us and our distinguished panel to discuss where New York’s law stands now and how we can ensure New York remains a beacon for women’s health and safety.

New York State Health Commissioner

On March 6, 2008, NARAL Pro-Choice New York will be hosting Universal Health Care: Will Women’s Needs be Met?, an event on universal health care and its implications on women’s health. The event will cover the advocacy, policy, and legislative aspects of achieving health care access for all New Yorkers. The following speakers will present:

Byllye Avery, founder of the Black Women’s Health Imperative and President of the Avery Institute for Social Change, will discuss the need for women to take leadership in working for quality, affordable health care for our families and our communities. She will describe the goals of the new national project she has co-founded, Raising Women’s Voices for the Health Care We Need.

Elisabeth Benjamin, Director of Healthcare Restructuring Initiatives for Community Service Society, will discuss her research on what New Yorkers are concerned about and how they perceive universal health care. She will explain how women in New York are more dependent on public insurance than are men. She will present an overview of current advocacy efforts to expand health care access in NYS, including the Community Service Society’s proposal entitled Cornerstone for Coverage.

Richard N. Gottfried, Chair of the New York State Commission on Health in the New York State Assembly, will discuss the legislative strategy to expand health care in New York State and his plan to increase coverage, entitled New York Health Plus: Better Coverage for All of Us at Lower Cost.

Lois Uttley, Director of the MergerWatch Project, will discuss her research on what women’s needs and desires are for a universal health care plan, and the steps we must take to ensure women’s voices are heard.

The event is designed to address the questions and concerns of all New York women. All are welcome and encouraged to attend this unique event.

NARAL Pro-Choice New York welcomes other women’s rights and reproductive rights organizations to co-sponsor the event.

Womenomics event

Womenomics Part I--Women and the Global Economy

Thurs., January 31, 2008
Program from 12:15-1:45 pm
at NYRAG
79 Fifth Avenue, 4th Fl (between 15th & 16th Sts.)
New York, NY

Join Demos, The World Policy Institute, The National Council for Research on Women, Vital Voices and a panel of distinguished speakers (see below) for a discussion of global trends around why investing, empowering and advancing women is smart business and good for the economy, women and their families. The discussion will continue later in 2008 with "Womenomics Part II - "Women's Successful Strategies to Grow the US Economy."

In 2006, The Economist coined the word "womenomics" when it declared, "Forget China, India and the Internet, economic growth is driven by women." In a three-part series it cited studies suggesting that the rapid entry of women into the workforce has added more to GDP than new jobs for men - and more in productivity than the technology sector. The World Economic Forum now explicitly publishes an annual gender empowerment index as a critical component in each country's economic competitiveness. The World Bank has launched a major initiative, "Gender Equality as Smart Economics." The featured panelists below will discuss the global implications of women in the workforce, and the impact of microfinance initiatives focusing on women as both breadwinners and entrepreneurs on families and economies worldwide.

Beyond Roe: Reproductive Justice and Sterilization Abuse in the Latina Community

Dr. Elena Gutierrez will discuss her new book, Fertile Matters: The Politics of Mexican Origin Women's Reproduction, and how racism and fears surrounding immigration and Mexican-origin women's so-called hyper fertility led to their coerced sterilization. Opening remarks, as well as the Q&A and discussion that follows, will draw connections between abortion and the involuntary sterilization of our communities, demonstrating how state policies and court decisions hinder reproductive autonomy and fuel our movement for reproductive justice.

THE PAST AND FUTURE OF REPRODUCTIVE RIGHTS IN NEW YORK STATE

An event in honor of the 35th Anniversary of Roe v. Wade

THE PAST AND FUTURE OF REPRODUCTIVE RIGHTS IN NEW YORK STATE

When: Tuesday, January 22, 2008 at 7:00 p.m.

Where: Center for Constitutional Rights, 666 Broadway, 6 th Fl. (between Bleecker & Bond Streets)

Recent restrictions on abortion rights and access to contraception at the federal and state levels, including the Supreme Court's recent decision concerning the federal abortion ban, have further rolled back women's right to self-determination. In the face of these persistent attacks on our rights, what strategies and analysis are useful in our work to try to defend and advance the struggle for women's ability to control their reproduction? This event brings together activists, attorneys and allies to discuss past and recent victories and set-backs in the fight for reproductive rights, how these can be applied to our work today and ideas for action.

Speakers include:

Annie Tummino

Co-chair of the Women's Liberation Birth Control Project and lead plaintiff in a lawsuit challenging the FDA's failure to approve the Morning-After Pill as an over-the-counter drug without any age restrictions.

Rhonda Copelon

Professor of Law and Director of the International Women's Human Rights Clinic of the City University of New York School of Law and lead attorney in Harris v. McRae, CCR's challenge to federal restrictions on the use of Medicaid funds for medically necessary abortions.

Nancy Stearns (invited)

Lead attorney in CCR's 1972 landmark case, Abramowicz v. Lefkowitz, which was the first challenge in the nation on behalf of a class of women to declare the NYS ban on abortion unconstitutional. The case sparked similar challenges in other states and created precedent for the Supreme Court's decision to legalize abortion in Roe.

NYS Assemblywoman Pat Eddington (invited)

Sponsor of the "Women's Reproductive Domain Act," in the NY State Assembly. This bill seeks to make a woman's decision whether to have an abortion a civil right that cannot be interfered with and any attempts to interfere with that right a form of discrimination.

Introductory remarks:

Andrea Costello

Organizer with Redstockings Allies and Veterans of the Women's Liberation Movement and CCR Staff Attorney.

Organized by:

The Women's Liberation Birth Control Project & The Center for Constitutional Rights

How Do Immigration Policies Affect People With or At Risk for HIV?
The national debate over immigration impacts the health of documented and undocumented people in our communities

Since the beginning of the epidemic, HIV positive immigrants have faced daunting challenges accessing care and treatment. And HIV negative immigrants are at particular risk for HIV due to policies that force them to remain largely underground.

The recently revised entry ban on HIV positive travelers adds disturbing new criteria while upholding many of the cruel provisions of the original ban – an embarrassment to the country, prohibiting the International AIDS Conference from ever being held in the US. For 20 years, HIV positive immigrants already in the
country have been barred from achieving any recognized legal status except in extremely limited circumstances. They’ve also been barred from coming to the US to immigrate.

Join us to discuss the challenges facing immigrants in our increasingly isolationist country – and learn how to take action!
