“Reproductive Rights in Poland
in the Context of the European Union”
Wanda Nowicka will discuss the predicaments of reproductive rights and health activism in Poland where abortion became illegal in 1993 as a result of the increased power of the Catholic Church. In response to these restrictions, Polish NGOs under Nowicka’s leadership have been conducting assertive advocacy and lobbying for reproductive health and rights. Their activism is increasingly turning to transnational actors, especially the European Union and the European Court of Human Rights, to compel reproductive justice locally.
