This Saturday, June 7th, marks the 43rd anniversary of the Griswold v. Connecticut decision in the Supreme Court, which established constitutional privacy protection for married couples’ use of contraception in 1965. Unmarried women obtained the right to use birth control a little later in 1972.
Sadly, despite the Supreme Court’s decisions, women across America are still fighting for their right to contraceptive access. From the financial barriers millions of women face in accessing contraception to pharmacists’ refusals to fill birth control prescriptions, women are left to defend their right to contraception. However, those aren’t the only barriers. Many in the anti-choice community are working not only to abolish the legal right to abortion but also to end women’s right to access birth control!
This Saturday, the American Life League is staging “Protest the Pill Day: The Pill Kills Babies” demonstrations across the country to protest the anniversary and women’s access to contraception. Their accusations about the dangers of the birth control pill are medically inaccurate and show the dangerous extent to which our opponents will go to control women’s bodies and their reproductive health. Show your support for women’s access to birth control by counter-demonstrating this Saturday!

Around the world, the social, economic and political aspects of gender are entwined with the HIV epidemic. Sexism, transphobia and the gender panic at the heart of homophobia are root causes of social injustice and marginalization that fuel the epidemic. But how do gender and gender expression create, increase or reduce vulnerability to HIV?
Do those living within binary gender structures, transgender and non-gender-conforming people and/or gay men of all gender histories have common cause in the epidemic – or are there distinct aspects to our struggles that hamper collaboration?
What do research, policy recommendations, and our life experiences tell us about where we should be directing prevention efforts?

Check out this great new video about the Reproductive Health Act! This bill is important beyond New York’s borders. When it finally passes, we believe it will change the way we think about reproductive freedom across the country. As other states rush to pass abortion bans and “trigger laws” that would ban all abortion if Roe v. Wade should fall, we are promoting a proactive piece of legislation that will safeguard our rights. We are working to lead the way to protect women’s health, and hope the rest of the country will follow.
The Reproductive Health Act strengthens New York’s laws and protects a woman’s ability to make one of life’s most important and life-changing decisions -- whether or when to have children. The bill guarantees women’s right to choose or refuse birth control or abortion. It treats family planning as a public health issue. And it ensures that if continuing a pregnancy would jeopardize a woman’s health, she will continue to have safe, legal options available.
Politicians have shown a frightening willingness to interfere in private medical decisions – and the Supreme Court has said that is okay. Now is the time to safeguard these important protections for women’s health and autonomy.
This bill isn’t just about pregnancy, abortion or birth control. It’s about autonomy, privacy, and dignity. It’s about creating and supporting healthy families. It is about health care policy that respects our ability as individuals to decide the course of our own lives.
It’s about creating the world we want.

Happy Hour Wednesday at Last Exit
The May happy hour will be held this Wednesday at Last Exit. Check out the bar Web site for directions. Nearest trains are the 4,5,2,3, N or R to Borough Hall/Court Street or the F/G to Bergen. As usual, festivities run from 6-9pm. Last Exit has agreed to extend happy hour until 8 so get there before then!
