The morning after...

Yesterday was Back Up Your Birth Control Day... a campaign dedicated to spreading the word about emergency contraception (EC), the safe and effective method of backing up your birth control. More than a hundred women’s health and medical organizations, students, and individuals organized across the nation for the seventh annual Back Up Your Birth Control Day of Action.

While the FDA decision that made EC available over-the-counter to women 18 and older was a victory, the high cost of EC over-the-counter, usually between $40-60 in pharmacies nationwide, is a continuing barrier to some women accessing EC.

On April 4-6, 2008, campus and community activists will be gathering at Hampshire College to unite for reproductive justice. We are expecting a large turnout—last year there were over 1100 participants from the US and abroad. We offer more than 40 workshops and trainings. Conference speakers address reproductive freedom as it relates to a broad range of social justice initiatives including economic justice, health care reform, racial equality, freedom from violence, immigrant rights, climate justice, and LGBTQ rights, just to name a few.

Over the weekend, you will deepen your understanding of issues you already know about, make new connections, and unite with others who are passionate about working for social justice.

Job Opening at NARAL NY

NARAL Pro-Choice New York is seeking a Field Canvass Director. This person must be fully committed to protecting reproductive health rights for women, have excellent communication skills, a strong work ethic, and previous managing experience. Canvassing, fundraising and/or organizing experience strongly preferred. Responsibilities include managing and training staff, fundraising, educating citizens about current threats to women’s health rights. Full time position, excellent training provided, limited travel required. Salary is $670-$710/week plus bonus and benefits package.

As federal protections of abortion access are weakened, New York’s leading reproductive rights organizations have been asking this question. The Bush administration has filled the courts with ultra-conservative judges that have made devastating decisions regarding women’s health. The Supreme Court’s unprecedented move to uphold the federal abortion ban last April was a wake-up call that we must fight to ensure that New York continues to protect and respect a woman’s ability to make private reproductive health care decisions.

Busses leave from New York City at 6:30am and will head back at 5pm.

Once arriving in Albany, the conference will feature an educational policy brunch with keynote speaker, Amy Goodman, to jumpstart participants' day of legislative lobby meetings and workshops.

Governor Spitzer tops the list of elected officials addressing this year's conference!

Planned Parenthood of New York City will cover all transportation costs and provide snacks for the day's trip.
