Hey there,

The next Repro Health Happy Hour will be next Thursday, September 30th at The Magician on the Lower East Side (118 Rivington, corner of Essex). Come on down, it's been too long.

As added incentive, our DC colleagues are gathering on the same evening (the RHHH empire expands!), so we can send each other emails of "cheers" and solidarity from our handheld devices as we mingle in our all too disconnected cities.

Also, we're expanding the host committee for the Repro Health Happy Hour and hoping to branch into all kinds of new fangled technology like the Facebook and the Twitter. More to come on that front.

The Activist Leadership Circle is a group for all people interested in getting more involved in NARAL Pro-Choice New York’s efforts.

Members of the Activist Leadership Circle meet once a month to discuss current reproductive health issues, learn about opportunities to participate and lead upcoming advocacy efforts, and develop new advocacy initiatives and campaigns.

The Circle has three Action Groups for members to join including the Outreach Action Group, Political and Legislative Action Group, and the Reproductive Health Education Group.

To join, you must participate in our 4-part series of new member trainings and events. Our next new member series kicks-off on Wednesday, May 12th.

This panel will feature a group of reproductive justice activists and birth doulas who work across the spectrum of pregnancy, birth, and women's health, connecting the traditional reproductive rights movement with new social justice activism that considers the complete physical, political, and economic well-being of girls and women. Birth doulas, as trained sources of physical, emotional, and educational support, work to empower women and support their reproductive choices. How does childbirth fit into the discussion around reproductive rights, a discussion that is often based around access to abortion and contraception? How can the reproductive justice framework help us consider institutional barriers, such as racism and poverty, that have limited women's empowerment and decision-making when it comes to their reproductive health?

Women's Liberation Class

Community Education Class Offered: “Women’s Liberation: Where Do I Fit In?”

This 8 week class is for women who want to understand the basic truths
about how we are held back on the job, in the classroom, in public
life and in the home; how a feminist movement was organized to change
this; how we can learn from this to build the kind of movement that
can put the male chauvinists on the run again, and how each woman can
contribute to that effort. Open to women only, the class will teach
the radical ideas and methods that sparked the rebirth of the feminist
movement in the 1960s.

Dates: Wednesdays, July 8th-August 26th, 7 p.m. – 9:30 p.m.

Location: Judson Memorial Church, Garden Room, 235 Thompson St between
Washington Square South and West 3rd St. Subway: ACE/BDFV to West 4th

Cost: $85 (sliding scale available). The fee includes class readings,
including "Feminist Revolution," a 224-page anthology by Redstockings
(an influential women’s liberation organization), and 70 additional
pages of essential classic feminist readings.

MORE INFORMATION ABOUT THE CLASS:

This class was developed by Gainesville (Fl) Women's Liberation. The
readings come from the Redstockings Women's Liberation Archives for
Action- www.redstockings.org. It will be taught by Erin Mahoney, Chair
of the Women’s Liberation Birth Control Project and Social Wage
Committee.

The class will teach the radical ideas and methods that sparked the
rebirth of the feminist movement in the 1960s through a combination of
lecture, discussion of readings, a film, and consciousness-raising
testifying and talk some about new women's liberation theory and
organizing. You will learn about the heroic struggle women have
waged, individually and collectively, for our survival and our
freedom; the political causes of the unhappiness in our daily lives;
women's progress owing to the feminist movement; and how to use this
information to change conditions for women.

This class is not about personal liberation through improved
self-esteem or an alternative women's culture, nor is it about
recalling a golden age of matriarchy. It is not about how feminism
can save the planet, nor is it about achieving status in the present
corrupt system through individual self-improvement or lifestyle
changes.

The following will be covered:

o The origins of women's liberation in the civil rights movement
o Consciousness-raising-get to the root of sexism-Who benefits? Who pays?
o The fight for abortion rights as an example of how feminist gains
have been won and lost
o Radical feminist theory-what is radical? What is a radical feminist
analysis? What is male supremacy?
o Women, Work, and Money-how organizing on new radical feminist theory
on the social wage (i.e., free public childcare, parental leave,
national health care) can be a springboard toward women's liberation.

The Doula Project is seeking Applicants!

The Doula Project (formerly the Abortion Doula Project) is seeking smart, awesome, caring people to join the organization in New York City!

What is a Doula?
The word doula is an ancient Greek term that translates to “caregiver.” A doula provides emotional support, pain management and relaxation techniques, and information to her clients as needed.

Birth - A Birth Doula will provide all of the above throughout a client's labor and delivery, as well as the immediate post-partum period (about two hours after the baby has been born). Additionally, a birth doula will provide guidance in the creation of a birth plan with her client, and prenatal and post-partum visits. This requires an on-call period for your client of about three weeks.

Abortion- An Abortion Doula will provide all of the above to clients who are choosing to terminate the pregnancy. The doula will stay with the client throughout her procedure, as well as part of the recovery period, and will remain in touch with the client as she desires thereafter.

About The Doula Project:
The Doula Project is a pro-choice New York City-based organization that was started in 2008 to provide services to lower-income individuals across the spectrum of pregnancy. It was founded by pro-choice doulas and reproductive justice activists, two of whom currently serve as the Project Co-Coordinators. The Project is a volunteer led and run organization that trains and manages its own doula base. We currently have 3 programs that serve the greater NYC area:

1) To provide doula care to people facing abortion, miscarriage, and stillbirth (in partnership with Bellevue Hospital). You do not have to be a birth doula to serve as an abortion doula. We train our own volunteers on this component of care.
2) To provide doula care to people choosing adoption (in partnership with Spence Chapin Adoption Agency). Please be a trained birth doula to apply. We do not require a lot of experience, only a formal training with an established doula certifying program.
3) To provide doula care on a case by case basis to lower-income individuals who are not affiliated with either of our partner organizations. Please be a trained birth doula to apply. We do not require a lot of experience, only a formal training with an established doula certifying program.

We are recruiting doulas for all components of our mission, though priority is given to those who are interested in being both Birth and Abortion Doulas. While you are not required to serve as a doula for all components, you are expected to support the mission and values of the entire project and the work each individual doula engages in. We encourage you to apply for all components of our work!

"Invisible Lives” is a book and photo show project presenting the work of acclaimed photographers whose images raise awareness of the one of the world’s least known humanitarian disasters. The ongoing civil war in eastern Burma has fueled the rise of one of the world’s most repressive regimes and driven more than two million people into Thailand and neighboring countries. The images featured in “Invisible Lives” bring the hidden worlds of these refugees and illegal migrants into the open, highlighting their humanity and lived experiences.

“Invisible Lives” features photographs by Tom Soddart, Morgan Hagar, Becky Hurwitz, and amateur Burmese and Karen photographers. Proceeds from the "Invisible Lives" book sales and from the event will fund reproductive health education for adolescents living along the Thai/Burma border.
